Q: Where, when and at what times do teams practice? When are games played?

Outdoor practices begin in late March early April and are held twice per week. Updated information on the 2010 practice schedule will be posted here as soon as it is available.

Q: What about the game schedule?

MBYLL games are played on Sundays although many of our coaches schedule games during the week during their regular practice times.
2009 game times and locations will be posted at a later date.

Q: Where can I buy Lacrosse equipment?

The best place to buy lacrosse equipment is from a store that specializes in lacrosse equipment as opposed to a general merchandise sports store. We recommend Baggataway Lacrosse in Brookline or Commonwealth Lacrosse.

Q: How much travel is involved with Lacrosse?

Newton is a member of the Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League (MBYLL). We play local teams from Wayland, Weston, Needham, Wellesley, Framingham and other surrounding towns. The furthest we might play a regular season game is Lincoln/Sudbury.

Q: How long is the Lacrosse season?

The MBYLL season ends in early June.

Q: Does Newton hold "tryouts" for teams? Is is possible that my son will get "cut" and not be able to play?

Newton does NOT hold tryouts for the MBYLL teams. Teams are divided EQUALLY and everyone who wants to play lacrosse in Newton will have a team to play on. There are no "A" teams or "B" teams. This is strictly against the rules of the MBYLL and Newton Lacrosse firmly adheres to those rules.

Q: I've heard that Newton might have a tournament team at the U15 level. What is this all about?

It is likely that for the 2009 season, Newton will sponsor a team made up of dedicated lacrosse players who will play games against teams from other towns with similar programs. This team will be seperate from the MBYLL team and could play tournaments into the summer.

Q: My son plays another sport during the spring. Will this be a problem?

Newton does not require a player to be a lacrosse player exclusively. Some of our players at the U11 level (3rd, 4th graders) play another spring sport and this is generally not a problem as long as the coach is informed.

At the U13 level, (5th and 6th grades)
coaches are given the opportunity to make decisions about playing time based on practice attendance. For the most part this is based on safety and fairness to players who have made lacrosse their spring sport of choice.

At the U15 level (7th, 8th grades) almost all of the players have chosen lacrosse as their Spring sport of choice. At the U15 level most of the players will have to make decision anyway as they enter the 9th grade where playing two sports really is not an option.

Q: My son plays for a "select" team where he was given a helmet with the logo of that team on it. Why can't he wear that helmet at Newton games and practices?

The standard helmet color for Newton is black or white. Newton Lacrosse has a uniform that is given to every player at the begining of the year. Although NYL does not supply player helmets it is expected that every player will conform to the uniform code with regard to helmets. When playing lacrosse for Newton, players may not wear helmets issued by other youth programs. This does not apply to players who may wear their school issued helmets or helmets confrming to the colors of their school team. If a player absolutely must wear a non-conforming helmet to MBYLL games the helmet will be "taped out"

Players may not wear practice or game jerseys during NYL practices that are issued by other youth programs.
